The pope, bishop of Rome and successor of St. Peter, is a permanent and visible source of unity among bishops as well as all faithful. By virtue of his office of the vicar of Christ and pastor of the universal Church, the Roman Pontiff has a full and supreme power over the Church.
At the same time he is the head of the Vatican City State. All his journeys abroad are thus pastoral and at the same time state visits.
His predecessor in 1978-2005 was John Paul II, born as Karol Wojtyła. During his pontificate he visited our country three times.
