The Pope visited the Infant Jesus of Prague

His Holiness met families and children there
The Pope visited the Infant Jesus of Prague

Yesterday at noon, the Holy Father Benedict XVI was officially welcomed at the Prague airport. He then met families with children in the Prague Virgin Mary Victorious and St. Antonius of Padova church in Mala Strana quarter in Prague. An atmosphere of festivity filled the church already an hour before his arrival. Many families with children, Czech and foreign, were preparing for the meeting with music and prayer. A reading from Legend of the Infant Jesus of Prague by Ivana Pecháčková was prepared for the waiting children.

At 12:30 p.m., the papal tailback halted before the church. The Holy Father was welcomed by the Mayor of the capital city of Prague, Pavel Bém, and the mayors of the individual quarters. The Pope was then welcomed by the representatives of the Infant Jesus of Prague Monastery. At the arrival of the Holy Father, "Iuventus, gaude!" was sung by a 64 member children's choir from Jablonec nad Nisou.

Entering the church, Benedict XVI cordially greeted the children present and with kind smiles. His first stop at the crowded church was by the alter of the Infant Jesus of Prague. The pope prayed and payed homage to the Infant Jesus before presenting a golden crown to it. The President of the Czech Bishops' Conference, Jan Graubner, welcomed the Pope on behalf of the Conference and expressed his wish "to commend all the families of our country to the Infant Jesus – especially those whose family life is in danger; and ... to pray that our families desire children, accept them with love and create a sound environment and an atmosphere of living faith for them so that a new generation of Christians could grow up to become the hope of the Church."

The Holy Father joined the bishop's ideas in his speech, which he began in Czech. "My thoughts turn to your own families and to all the families in the world, in their joys and difficulties." He emphesized the importance of every human being without exceptions. "Every human person would then be appreciated not for what he has, but for who he is, since in the face of every human being, without distinction of race or culture, God’s image shines forth."

At the end of his speech, the Pope turned to the children and families directly, inviting them to follow the example of the Infant Jesus: "You have come here in large numbers to meet me, and for this I thank you most warmly. You are greatly loved by the Child Jesus, and you should return his love by following his example: be obedient, good and kind. Learn to be, like him, a source of joy to your parents. Be true friends of Jesus, and always turn to him in trust. Pray to him for yourselves, for your parents, relations, teachers and friends, and pray also for me." The meeting was concluded by the prayer of the Lord.

Around 1:50 p.m., his Holiness was leaving the church, through hundreds of ethusiastic people who had gathered in frontt of the church to see the Pope with their own eyes. The Papamobile was all ready to transport the pope to a meeting with the Czech politicians at the Prague Castle. Yesterday's programme was concluded at 6 p.m. in the cathedral of Ss. Vitus, Wenceslaus and Adalbert by a meeting with the Czech Church representatives.
