Pope among brothers from other Christian churches

Meeting with representatives of the Ecumenical Council of Churches
Pope among brothers from other Christian churches

Following the II Vatican Council, the Church tirelessly seeks dialogue with people of different opinions, especially with Christians of other churches and church communities. This dialogue is not easy, but the important thing is that it is going on and it gradually brings its visible fruits. For this reason, meetings with representatives of other churches are scheduled for all papal trips. During them, the Pope acts as a brother who has come to listen and to encourage dialogue at the same time. Ecumenical contacts in the Czech Republic are quite vivid.

The meeting at the Archbishop's Palace was attended by some 40 people. Dr Pavel Černý, president of the Ecumenical Council of Churches in the Czech Republic, was speaking at the beginning. He emphasized that Christians in our society can only succeed when they jointly bear witness of Christ and that this cooperation progresses well in many projects. He also appreciated papal theological works.

The discourse of the Holy Father followed; he stated that attempts to marginalize the influence of Christianity upon public life emerge, sometimes under the pretext that its teachings are detrimental to the well-being of society. This should prompt the Christians to reflect upon what each of them can offer mankind n the practical and ethical level. The faith in Christ brings the message of salvation that gives hope for the future. Benedict XVI also underlined the necessity to remind Europe of her roots. He called on the gathered to ask the Lord for a spirit of courage to share the timeless saving truths which will continue to shape the social and cultural progress of this continent. He then concluded his speech with a wish to "work tirelessly for the unity" desired by God for the whole human race.

The meeting then went on in a common prayer of all the present representatives of the churches, who were then introduced to the Holy Father. The churches were also present at the Sunday morning papal mass in Brno and will have their representatives also in Stará Boleslav today.

Full text of the Pope's speech is available here, an unofficial translation of the speech by Dr Černý is attached to the article.
